The First Book Stickered for Delivery!

Our Mission:

Comic Books Care is a volunteer organization devoted to providing hospitalized children with free comic books.  We believe that comic books can provide entertainment, escape and inspiration to children struggling with illness.  Our mission is to connect the comic book community with New England area hospitals to share the magic of comics with children in need.

Our primary goal:

Our goal is to get comics from shops, collectors and former collectors and get them into the hands of kids in hospitals and other areas where they could use a bit of fun distraction.

Why?

Because kids who are sick, troubled or in a rough spot need a bit of fun and distraction in their lives, they need to escape for a little while. It also helps that they can see others do better and be better, heroes overcoming adversity. This is a fun way for them to do that. And as kids (and many adults) from all walks of life love superheroes, it will help them relate to each other.

Where did the idea for Comic Books Care come from?

Almost a year ago someone I know online put out a call for comics to read for her to pass the time. She recently had become bed ridden due to a medical condition. After I sent a few boxes to her we talked and I found out that the comics were a hit. And not just with her, but with her husband, her physical therapist, her physical therapist’s kids… After we totaled it up it turned out that each comic had been read by 10 or 11 different people.  That gave me the idea to see if there was a way to put gently used comics in as many hands as possible so that they could get read and passed along making more people happy. And who needs happiness more than kids in a rough situation like being in a hospital.

How will people find out about this?

They will find out about this from our booths at local conventions, word of mouth, from one comic fan/geek to another and light social media.

How will get kids get the comics?

Comics will be delivered to hospitals, children’s hospitals, family shelters and other care centers that have kids in need, by myself or later as the group grows by cosplayers in kid recognizable costumes.

How often will comics be delivered?

At this time because the rate of donation is unknown I don’t have an exact time table. The eventual goal after donations pick up will be to deliver a box of 30 to 40 books once a month to each of the centers in the area, depending on the number of kids at the location.

How will Comic Books Care get comics and why?

Many comic book collectors have stacks of comics that they don’t really care about and that are just taking up space. Some series just aren’t their thing. Others were a good read but not something that will be kept forever as part of a collection. Comic Books Care can give people an idea of what they can do with the comics that they don’t want any more, give them to us. so we can give them to kids.

Comics will be delivered to CBC where they will be sorted, packed and then delivered to centers in need. Or if there is a whole lot of them, we can come to you can get them.

And getting this to kinds in need will make them happy. And that is our end goal. Making kids happy.

What kind of comics are needed?

DC, Marvel, Star Wars, My Little Pony, Archie, pretty much anything kid friendly will be gratefully accepted. The comics need to be in good like new readable condition.

Comics or graphic novels need to be newer or a really fun story line. (Some stuff 10 or more years ago is still a really good read.) We want to keep kids fairly current so when they see their favorite character in a movie or can actually go buy a comic from a shop they can understand what is going on. But if it is a good story we are not going to say no to it.

What happens if the comics donated are older or not the type that should be given to kids?

They will be bundled in lots and sold on Ebay. If a very rare or valuable comic is donated it will be individually sold.

What happens to the money?

100% of money gained will be used for CBC. Things like mail box and storage rental, supplies, shipping and packaging of the books as well as long and short boxes for book storage. Additionally donations will be used to buy comics and/or graphic novels that are kid friendly and given out.

What happens after Comic Books Care gets the comics?

Comics will be checked for condition, stickered, sorted by content and organized by book title/character. After that is sorted CBC will contact local centers and see if a new shipment is needed. Short runs of several characters will be packaged together for delivery.

What places are you currently giving comics to?

At the moment none. This is still in the building and gathering phases. It would be bad to start to drop off comics a few times and run out and not be able to do it again. The goal is to make this sustainable to give everyone lots of fun in the long run.

After a good backlog is developed delivery will commence.

Our plan is to start with the children’s hospitals in Providence and Boston area and spread from there.
